Listerine Use within Dr. Ellie's Complete Mouth Care System

About Listerine

  • Dr. Ellie recommends only Listerine Antiseptic Original and Cool Mint due to specific formulation
  • Tastes "strong," but is not an aggressive rinse
  • Originally formulated in 1879
  • It is an essential oil rinse
    • Active ingredients derived from three essential oils: eucalyptus, menthol, and thymol
  • These oils improve gum health and target certain bacteria, especially immature streptococcus mutans bacteria, without destroying mouth biofilm
  • Does not result in bacterial resistance of any kind
  • 21.6% alcohol not sufficient amount to indiscriminately kill all bacteria; unlike chlorohexidine
  • Alcohol necessary to dissolve the essential oils so they can work effectively

Listerine Use in the System

  • Because of the small amount of alcohol and acidity, Listerine should be used between other steps, never alone.
    • Crest Cavity Protection Regular Paste contains the correct type and concentration of sodium fluoride to prime tooth enamel and offer protection.
    • Follow Listerine with ACT Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash to ensure there is no alcohol remaining and to stimulate enamel repair and mineralization.
  • Its acidity bolsters effectiveness of sodium fluoride because those ingredients work synergistically.
  • Rinse for 30 seconds, but no more than 1 minute.

If Listerine "Burns"

  • If Listerine feels too strong and uncomfortable in the mouth, use it for less time, even if only a few seconds.
  • Then match or extend that same length of rinsing time with ACT Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash.
    • If rinsed with Listerine for 5 seconds, rinse with ACT for at least 5 seconds, preferably 1 minute.
    • If rinsed with Listerine for 30 seconds, rinse with ACT for at least 30 seconds, preferably 1 minute.
  • Eventually, you will tolerate it longer as your biofilm develops and offers more tooth protection.
