Coloration or "Staining" on Teeth
Coloration can sometimes occur after starting Dr. Ellie's Complete Mouth Care System (CMCS). Below is an explanation from Dr. Ellie about the process of oral health improvements and its relation to "stains" on teeth.
Dr. Ellie:
My Complete Mouth Care System works in harmony with your mouth saliva to support the natural rebuilding of a healthy oral biofilm - to stop staining in the future.
There is a pattern to the improvements that happen on your journey to oral health. Plaque bacteria float in saliva, land on your teeth and attach in a sticky, adhesive way. My strategy of using xylitol and the Complete Mouth Care System first transforms your oral microbiome and changes the bacteria in your saliva so that less and less land, attach, and regrow on the hard surface of your teeth. Eventually, the dead plaque bacteria loses its energy, dies off, and slides off the tooth enamel.
Problems occur if tooth enamel has been worn away or if it has become porous - and this is also a problem if cement is exposed on root surfaces. Normally my system can dislodge plaque but in porous areas or on the surface or porous enamel the bacteria can attach tightly and do not easily slide off. This is often the brown staining that you see when first using the Complete Mouth Care System. It can be considered “remnants of inactive or “dead” plaque.
The solution is to ensure you are using the Dr. Plotkas Mouthwatchers brushes that I recommend. An electric or other brushes may not be sufficiently resilient to detach these bacteria from these porous surfaces. Sometimes even this brushing is not enough. In which case, I recommend adding some granular xylitol to the Crest toothpaste to help exfoliate any of this dead plaque from the teeth. Many people need this kind of help during the first months on the system.
Ideally I recommend using the Complete Mouth Care System for 6 months, so that your saliva can be "cleaned" by xylitol prior to a professional dental cleaning to gain the maximum benefit of the dental cleaning.
The products recommended for the CMCS do not cause internal tooth staining. Any stains are outside surface debris which can be cleaned away.
Here are the main things to consider if you see stains in the first months on my system:
- Use two Mouthwatchers brushes and allow them to dry between uses so as not to transfer bacteria
- Thoroughly brush your whole tooth and at the gum line, not just gum massage
- Do the system twice a day - once is not enough if you have persistent staining
- Do not eat or drink for an hour afterwards
- ENSURE you are using the EXACT products in the Complete Mouth Care System. There are many similar-looking products but the formulas are not the same and will not provide the same results. Any change in the products of the CMCS will not produce the desired results.
- You may need to add some xylitol granules to the toothpaste to make it more exfoliating
