Xylitol and Gastrointestinal Health

Some people may experience gastrointestinal issues when first using xylitol. Xylitol is a prebiotic fiber food that supports mouth and intestinal probiotic bacteria.

For people with digestive sensitivities, xylitol may allow body liquids to flow through the leaky gut lining and into the gut. This can cause loose stools, as well as gas, bloating, or an upset stomach.

Anyone with digestive concerns should begin very slowly, using only one gram of xylitol per day (one Zellie’s gum or two Zellie’s mints) at the end of one meal each day. As digestive health improves, additional xylitol can be gradually added. Adequate tolerance to xylitol’s hygroscopic effects may take a few months, depending on a person’s gastrointestinal health.

If you find that you need to reduce or eliminate the amount of xylitol you are consuming, Dr. Ellie suggests focusing on other lifestyle habits to support oral health, including:

  • Practicing mouth resting (taking breaks from constant snacking/drinking) to allow your beneficial saliva time to strengthen your enamel
  • eating particular protective foods that alkalize your mouth
